Robert F. “Bob” Howard, 81, ofDecatur, passed away at6:30 p.m.Tuesday, September 18, 2012in Aspen Ridge Nursing Home.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at10:30 a.m.,Saturday, September 22, 2012at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Mt. Zion, IL with Rev. Joseph  Molloy and Deacon James Ghiglione assisting.  A Rosary service will be held at9:15 a.m.Saturday morning in the church and the family will receive friends for a time of visitation from9:30 a.m.until service time before the Mass. Burial will be in thePoint PleasantCemetery, Long Creek with full military honors provided by the Macon County Honor Guard.  Memorials may be made to the Decatur Right to Life or the donor’s choice.

 

Bob was bornNovember 20, 1930inWalker,ILthe son of Floyd Preston and Lois Elizabeth (Polk) Howard.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart Recipient. He was retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after 29 years of service having obtained the rank of Detective.  Following his retirement, Bob returned to centralIllinoisto assist with his sister’s family farming operation.  Bob had a passion for farming.  He also enjoyed boating and riding motorcycles.  Several times in his life he rode his Harley-Davidson across the country.  He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the American Legion, Pana Elks Club and the Taylorville Moose Lodge.  He married Nancy Travis.  She preceded him in death.  He later married Lorraine Schollmeier onMay 15, 2004.

 

Surviving is his wife: Lorraine of Decatur; children: Dr. Christos Robert Howard and Christianna Helen Howard both of California; step children: Steve Schollmeier and his wife Janet, of Oreana, Cathy Schollmeier of Decatur, Gary Schollmeier and his wife Roseann of Mt. Zion, Teresa Butterfield and her husband Dru of Bothell, Washington, Mike Schollmeier and his wife Joan of Decatur, Ben Schollmeier and his wife Trina of Mitchell, IL sisters: Shirley Porter of Pana, Donna Howse and her husband James of Assumption, Mary Himes of Assumption; brother: James P. Howard and his wife Jan of Kewanee; half-sister: Karen Howard of Mauston, WI.; uncle: Glenn Polk of Decatur; many nieces and nephews and fourteen step grandchildren also survive.

 

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and wife Nancy.
